Defence Network Operations Centre

People:Budget: $19 Million
Location:Canberra, ACT
Year:2004

The new Defence Network Operations Centre located at HMAS Harman in Canberra, co-locates a number of previously separate information based arms of Australia’s Defence Force. Under the new roof, the DNOC team operates Australia’s fourth largest telecommunications network, operating 24/7.

The striking form of the building is defined by the distinctive roof which also forms the southern façade.

The roof, equivalent in area to a hockey field, extends 80m along its east axis and pitches 3° along its minor axis. The large eaves and single gutter form both an expressive and functional feature protecting the glazed northern elevation.

The building shell, although simple in plan, form and construction materials, is designed to produce a striking example of a contemporary, intelligent building.
